Mile-by-Mile: Titus Peak Route

0.0 Unmarked Trailhead on the Titus Canyon Road (3,745ft.). The trailhead is a pulloff at the point where the Titus Canyon Road enters Titus Canyon. Head north up the pretty drainage. (36.853166°, -117.066801°)

0.4 Wash split (3,914ft.). Take the left fork to walk west. (Taking the right fork would bring you up Upper Titus Canyon.) (36.857897°, -117.068167°)

0.75 Leave wash (4,009ft.). Turn left, out of the wash, to walk along the base of the mountain until you can find a Class 2 route up the mountain. When you find a good route, begin climbing south or southwest toward the high point. (36.859783°, -117.072702°)

1.3 Titus Peak (4,522ft.). Enjoy views down into Titus Canyon as well as into the Grapevine Mountains. (36.854039°, -117.071515°)

History & More

You can begin climbing the mountain sooner. However, the east and some of the north faces of the mountain require Class 4 scrambling – circling around to the west or northwest side allows for mostly Class 2 scrambles.

Titus Canyon – and therefore Titus Peak – was named for an ill-fated miner who came to the canyon in 1906. When supplies and water ran low, he went back to Rhyolite to bring back food and water to his companions. No one knows what happened to him along the way, but he was never seen again.
